In Security Online, Social Media

To Facebook or not to Facebook, that is the Question…

What to do about your personal data?

I will have to break this into different parts since there is so much information to cover and links to share.

  • Personal Data: Facebook and other sites
  • How data is collected and used
  • Business Pages and how you also use this data

The first thing you want to know is “Was MY data stolen or used” and that depends on you Facebook habits and you Facebook friends’ habits. You should NEVER use your Facebook login to connect sites, especially quizzes, games and FREE stuff.  Remember there is no FREE lunch.  Once you give your Credentials away and agree to their terms of service, which you did not read, they have all the access they could ever want.  It may be easy to login in with your Facebook Credentials and fun to share your quiz results with your friends but not so secure.  You need to go to your security settings and apps and update your settings Now.

To Do List

  1. Check to see if your data was stolen – Click Here
    1. Your Digital Life
    2. Download your Archive
  2. Check your apps and delete – Click Here
  3. Update Your Privacy Settings – Click Here

Now that you have secured your Facebook site, your safe… Not so much.  Data is collected on all sites and apps that you use.  So where is the middle ground, what are my individual rights.  This is the new conversation on your privacy online.   All platforms can cause problems and can spread fake information, so you need to know where you share and how you connect.  DO NOT connect all your sites through your Facebook or any other sign on.  Use a secure encrypted password program like LastPass to help you keep your digital passwords in order.

  1. Stronger Privacy Laws
  2. How you are tracked even when not on line
  3. Facebook’s Data sharing
  4. Twitter and Fake News

But what to do about our Business Facebook pages?  The truth is that you also use the data collected by Facebook and others to target potential clients when you boost a post or create a targeted ad.  The data collection is a double-edged sword.  These platforms are Advertising machines. The reason they are FREE is because they sell advertising to make money.  Each time there is an algorithm change or privacy settings change it is to push their monetary agenda forward.  You as a fellow business owner should acknowledge their creativity but with skepticism.  I would equate it to the ethical used car salesman vs the stereotypical used car salesman that would sell you any car at all costs.  Buyer beware or educate yourself to understand what is being harvested.
